Diurnal cycles of precipitation, clouds, and lightning in the tropics from 9 years of TRMM observations

چکیده
[1] The diurnal cycles of surface rainfall, population of precipitation systems, deep intense convection reaching near the tropopause, lightning flash counts, cold clouds, and vertical structure of precipitation are analyzed over the tropics, using 9 years of TRMM Precipitation Radar, Visible and Infrared Scanner, and Lightning Imaging Sensor measurements. The diurnal cycles over land include a late afternoon maximum of precipitation systems, with phase differences among cloud, precipitation, flash counts, and radar echo at different altitudes. Over ocean, the diurnal cycles are interpreted as having contributions from nocturnal precipitation systems and early afternoon showers. There are double peaks of radar reflectivity above 12 km near 0230 and 0530 local time over oceans. The oceanic clouds with infrared brightness temperature < 235 K have two peaks, one during the night and the other in early afternoon. Citation: Liu, C., and E. J. Implications of the differences between daytime and nighttime CloudSat observations over the tropics
[1] Using 1 year of CloudSat level 2B Cloud Geometrical Profile product, the vertical structures, geographical distributions, and seasonal variations of cloud occurrence at the daytime (1330 LT) and the nighttime (0130 LT) overpasses and their differences over tropical land and ocean are presented separately. The differences between the cloud and precipitation occurrence at 0130 and 1330 LT and...
متن کاملDiurnal Variations of Global Thunderstorms and Electrified Shower Clouds and Their Contribution to the Global Electrical Circuit
The long-standing mainstay of support for C. T. R. Wilson’s global circuit hypothesis is the similarity between the diurnal variation of thunderstorm days in universal time and the Carnegie curve of electrical potential gradient. This rough agreement has sustained the widespread view that thunderstorms are the ‘‘batteries’’ for the global electrical circuit. This study utilizes 10 years of Trop...

[1] By incorporating the Tropical Rainfall Measurement Mission (TRMM) satellite orbital information into the Colorado State University General Circulation Model (CSUGCM), we are able to ‘‘fly’’ a satellite in theGCMand sample the simulated atmosphere in the sameway as the TRMM sensors sample the real atmosphere. The TRMM-sampled statistics for precipitation and radiative fluxes at annual, intra...
متن کاملRainfall Contributions from Precipitation Systems with Different Sizes, Convective Intensities, and Durations over the Tropics and Subtropics
The rainfall contributions from precipitation features (PFs) with full spectra of different sizes and convective intensities over the tropics and subtropics are summarized using 12 yr of version 6 Tropical Rainfall Measuring Mission (TRMM) Precipitation Radar (PR) and Microwave Imager (TMI) observations. Regional, seasonal, and diurnal variations of the rainfall contributions from various PFs a...

[1] Hourly averaged precipitation rates from an ensemble of the Community Climate Model version 3 (CCM3) simulations for the 44-month period from January 1998 through August 2001 are compared to observations from the Tropical Rainfall Measuring Mission (TRMM) satellite. In order to have adequate sampling by the satellite, comparisons are made for 15 longitude 10 latitude boxes and for larger ge...
